The Town of Hamilton


 
The Town of Hamilton borders DeKalb (Franklin Township) and Steuben (Otsego Township) counties in the State of Indiana.

AMENITIES: Although Hamilton has always remained a small town, during the summer months the population explodes due to the popularity of Hamilton Lake, which covers over 800 acres.
The recreational activities in Hamilton include: boat, fishing and water skiing on Hamilton Lake, and the two-mile Fish Creek Trail that links Hamilton’s Girt L. Gnagy Park to Ball Lake in Steuben County. Gnagy Park houses baseball diamonds and a tennis association. Hamilton also includes Cold Springs Golf Course and several other golf courses nearby.

Downtown Hamilton is located on the south side of Hamilton Lake. It includes restaurants, merchants, and professional services.  
 
EDUCATION: All students attend Hamilton Community Schools.
 
EMERGENCY SERVICES:  The police department includes one marshall, two deputies and 1 reserve officer.  The Hamilton Fire Station is located at the town hall; one fire chief and one assistant fire chief  serves the community.
 
GOVERNMENT:  Five at large town council members and a clerk treasurer are elected every four years.  The town council holds legislative and executive jurisdiction for the town; the clerk treasurer is responsible for town finances.  The town council elects a president and vice-president every year for the council.  The council appoints a town manager to oversee administration, planning and development, zoning, code enforcement, police department, water treatment facility and the street department.  Town Council meets on the first Monday of every month.
 
HISTORIC:  the Town of Hamilton has a long and interesting history.  Known as "Enterprise" in the late 1830's, the area where the town is located was sold and the name was changed to Hamilton in 1844. The area had pioneers settling as early as the middle of the 1700’s. Before the pioneers arrived, Native American Indians were drawn to Hamilton in great numbers because of the many lakes and prosperous fishing.
