AUBURN — Erin Ray says she loves to bring fun activities to people.

That will be her task as the new recreation coordinator for the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department.

Ray is wrapping up her second week in her new role. She arrives with 16 months of experience as the recreation and aquatics director for the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department, a job she took three days after graduating from Indiana State University.

A native of Skokie, Illinois, in suburban Chicago, Ray earned a degree in recreation and sports management, with a concentration in youth leadership.

“I love the event-coordinating side of it,” she said about her career choice. “I like planning community events that are family-friendly that everybody can enjoy."

With community events, residents “don’t have to spend a lot of money to go out, and they can stay in their hometown and have fun,” she said.

At Greencastle, her most popular events included a “Winnie the Pooh” day and a Breakfast with the Grinch during the Christmas season.

When she saw the opening in Auburn, she said, “I decided it was a great opportunity and couldn’t pass it up.”

In her new job, “It’s a blank canvas, and I’m excited to bring a bunch of programs to Auburn and give families something to do,” she said.

“Auburn Parks and Rec would like to see a lot of youth programs. I would love to bring some day camps to Auburn so that there’s something for kids to do during the summer,” Ray said.

Auburn is lucky to have features such as its trails and the Rieke Park Lodge, Ray said.

She added, “The parks are amazing. It’s awesome to see a community that really loves their parks system.”
