AUBURN — The DeKalb County Visitors Bureau is celebrating Visit DeKalb County Week in conjunction with Visit Indiana Week May 6-12.
Today’s theme is Foodie Friday, which celebrates the many dining options in DeKalb County. “There’s nothing better than a great meal, and tourists are willing to drive long distances to find one,” said Tina Bobilya, executive director of the visitors bureau. “Culinary tourism is a growing trend in travel, and lucky for us we have plenty of options for casual and fine dining around the area.”
According to the county’s 2016 Tourism Economic Impact Study, food and beverage expenditures amounted to over $14 million and 33 percent of annual visitor spending in DeKalb County.
“This is the day that we celebrate eateries around the county that serve up local favorites, like the hand-breaded pork tenderloin sandwich from the Auburn Town Tavern, good BBQ from Timmy’s in Garrett or Pizza, Subs and BBQ in St. Joe, egg rolls from Chef Peng’s or lunchtime coney dogs from the Brown House,” Bobilya said.
“Need a night out with the spouse? Head over to Bridgewater Water’s Edge, Shorty’s Steakhouse, Sandra D’s Italian Garden or the new Auburn City Steakhouse for a fine dining experience. Or head over to the Italian Grille or Mad Anthony Tap Room for a casual night out,” she added. “In between meals, the county is loaded with impressive places for ice cream and frozen treats, baked goods, coffee and candies. Don’t forget to grab some popcorn from Martha’s Popcorn Stand.”
Bobilya encouraged residents to experience a taste of the local flavors and try something new this weekend and throughout the year.
Visit DeKalb County Week is held in conjunction with Visit Indiana Week, and locations across the state are offering discounts on dining experiences. Details on discounts may be found online at A list of DeKalb County food and dining options is at
